Where are all the blackberries?

I went for a bike ride to High Park today. I currently have an APB out for blackberries and thought that Toronto's largest park would be a good place to start. Wrong. Nary a blackerry in sight. I did discover the zoo however. It was slightly surreal and old school. The animals were in fields that were fenced off with chain link fence so if they decided to be near the fence, you could be within 6" of them. I looked the emu right in the eye; it made a strange rattling noise like two sticks in a box. I also saw my first cardinal. It was too fast for a photo.

They're all on Bowen Island, right along my street!

damn, i figured as much. there are a quite a few other berries that grow wild here (mulberries, saskatoons, choke cherries) but they are not in season now. there are some barren, industrial wastelands north of our house, i going there next.

Reva, perhaps you will like this poem -

August

When the blackberries hang
swollen in the woods, in the brambles
nobody owns, I spend

all day among the high
branches, reaching
my ripped arms, thinking

of nothing, cramming
the black honey of summer
into my mouth; all day my body

accepts what it is. In the dark
creeks that run by there is
this thick paw of my life darting among

the black bells, the leaves; there is
this happy tongue.

Your photos of High Park bring back memories... I used to spend many hours there with Adrian (he, an infant in a stroller), passing the time, sleep-walking (almost), then browsing along Roncesvalles, drooling at all the delis! At present though, Adrian (just returned from toronto) and I are thinking of invading the Bowen Blackberries. Hope everyone's toes are feeling better...

Reva, for all the blackberries you could ever want, have a look at the pics Rosie took of the berry picking on Bowen yesterday, on her Flickr site - www.flickr.com/
