your assignment: kill the backstabbing sister

I've reconsidered having this online. It could potentially be an issue, given that a lot of money was put into this film and it was a theatrically released feature. The copyright holders would probably be furious if somehow they found out. Sorry, I'll do it again one day with something of my own.

L'shanah tovah

Today is the first day of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year. A sweet year to all.

acronymn fun

I tried everyone's names. The ones that were interesting are below:

"AREN stands for Amateur Radio Emergency Network. AREN is not an alternative to any existing Emergency Service but, rather, a reserve communications resource included in Major Emergency Plans that the served agencies may call on as required. In an Emergency AREN shall come into operation if requested to do so by an incident Controller of Operations or a Senior Official of a designated Emergency Service. It shall function under such control in order to meet the radio communications needs of that service for the required duration. Situations when AREN can be of Assistance."

REVA [Romania Education Vision Action ] is a small charity on the Isle of Wight, set up in memory of a dear friend Eva Benke who tragically died in 1997. Eva, a Hungarian, was an English teacher who lived in the town of Targu Mures. In 1991 she help organise a visit to the town by a group of teachers from the Isle-of-Wight. An English doctor, who had visited the town and the wife of the pastor of the local Reformed church, arranged the visit. The teachers stayed for three weeks teaching conversation English to groups of local people. The visit was a great success and continued each summer for a number of years.

Welcome to the digital research repository of the University of Bristol. ROSE offers open access to the full text of a growing proportion of the academic research of the University. It complements IRIS, the University's Integrated Research Information System.

KATE has truly become the main organization for the field of English education in Korea and there is no dispute that we are indeed the exemplary model in our professional field in both its size and achievements. Our quarterly journal English Education is evaluated as the leading academic journal of its kind by the Korea Research Foundation. The future expansion of KATE will be just like its past development: the speed of its growth may not be observed overnight, but the result of the building blocks continuous laid by every participating member will certainly strike us with awe in the end.

The first main objective of the VICTORIA Project is the specification, design, and development of software tools and hardware platforms to build a flexible computer vision system, based on the use of advanced image processing, pattern recognition, and data fusion techniques for the analysis of moving objects in outdoor scenarios. This first main objective requires to accomplish the following yardsticks:

Functional Specifications of the System, taking into account the inputs provided by the end-user partner.
Development of an advanced image analysis software, addressing the following issues:
* Motion Analysis: this part of the software must identify the regions of the image that should be subjected to an in-depth analysis, and detect object intrusion in a multi-lane environment.

ERMA

During the 1950s, researchers at the Stanford Research Institute invented "ERMA", the Electronic Recording Method of Accounting computer processing system. ERMA began as a project for the Bank of America in an effort to computerize the banking industry.

The best chocolate sauce

It's actually a Hot Fudge sauce. I thought it sounded too dirty, so I said chocolate in the title.

1. Assemble ingredients: soy milk, dark chocolate, maple syrup, cocoa and vanilla.

2. Pour soy milk and cocoa in saucepan over medium heat.

3. Whisk until fully combined and smooth. Watch out for lumps; be aggressive!

4. Add maple syrup to taste. Whisk.

5. Add chocolate (broken into chunks). Whisk until fully combined.

6. Whisk (sense a pattern developing?) until sauce begins to thicken. Take care to mix the sauce continuously as chocolate burns very quickly.

7. Keep the cat entertained while continuing to whisk.

8. Once it has thickened...

9. Add in vanilla. Whisk.

10. Taste test to ensure proper levels of sweetness, bitterness, chocolate and vanilla.

11. Pour over ice cream (or cake or pancakes or fruit or directly in mouth) and enjoy.

Back to regularly scheduled life

Well, TIFF is finished for this year. Aren clocked in at 27 films and I at 16 (13 together). Some good, some walk-out-of-the-theatre bad, some interesting but not compatible with the medium of film. All in all it was fun and exhausting. My day went a little something like this: get up at 5:00am, at the Industry Box Office for 6:30, issue tickets to directors, actors, buyers and sales reps from around the world, off at 1:00pm, watch films and try to be in bed for 10:00pm. Aren went pretty hardcore with up to 5 screenings a day. Here is our very opinionated breakdown of what we saw:

Top 2 (as pictured above):
Shortbus
Red Road

Exceptional:
Climates
The Art of Crying
Away From Her
Princess

Good:
Requiem
London to Brighton
An Evening with Michael Moore
Stranger than Fiction
The Fall
Rescue Dawn
Monkey Warfare
Vanguard Cinema: John Waters in conversation with John Cameron Mitchell
The Last Winter
The Banquet
Lights in the Dusk
Breaking and Entering

Could have been better:
Bamako
Brand upon the Brain!
Born and Bred
L'Homme de sa Vie
Penelope
The Bubble

Shouldn't have been a film:
Manufactured Landscapes
The Prisoner or How I Planned to Kill Tony Blair

Walk-out-of-the-theatre bad:
Waiter
The White Planet
A Stone's Throw
Bugmaster
The Caiman

In other news, we finally found a place. It's another sublet, on the other side of town (Dundas St East and Ontario). Aren's commute will much shorter and it'll be the most downtown/urban place either of us has lived. The immediate neighborhood isn't amazing but it's quite close to Cabbagetown which seems nice and has lots of amenities. The apartment itself is a medium sized studio (we seem to living in smaller and smaller places), has in suite laundry, hardwood floors and a dishwasher. The doing the dishes is the bane of both of our existences so hopefully this it will add a delightful ease to our lives. The building has a communal party room and a beautiful rooftop deck with a container garden. I'm looking forward to having some herbs though I suppose there isn't much more growing time left in this neck of the woods.

Wednesday

It has a big head

We ran into an enormous beast as we walked back from a cute prospective apartment tonight. Nothing is confirmed, but we're hopeful our journey of sadness is nearing its end.

CFC bbq

I went to the film centre bbq today. It was the largest bbq I've ever seen - 2500 people or so. Along with the gourmet sausages, there was indian food, gelato and pop shoppe sodas. They also had a martini station. I had 3 delicious gin/lemon/licorice drinks.

I took a few photos right before I left, sorry nothing great. Here are some of my peers: Susan (director), Kelly (director) and Mike (editor)

Katherine (writer), Audrey (director) and Chris (writer)

Saturday

festivals and dungeons

The lineup for last night's 'Brand on the Brain' screening stretched around corners and into alleyways like a row of dominos. I couldn't find a way to capture it properly... but here's the first long stretch. The film was OK, but there was a live orchestra and a group of live foley artists - making wave sounds, smashing plates and all that. Pretty cool. The theatre was old and gold, just like the orpheum.

To explain the last part of this post's title, I'll just say that we've also been house hunting these past few days

Friday

a little fun

Thursday

TIFF and Hairspray

We've been busy. But these next couple weeks are going to be fun. I'm planning on seeing 3 movies a day for the entire film festival. The CFC residents all get an industry pass which gives you pretty much full access. Reva gets a pass thanks to her gig at the film festival. She also gets public screening tickets so we can go to some of the fancy gala events. We're going to two of those tomorrow night. Tonight we saw Argentian 'Born and Bred' together. It had some serious flaws.

In other news: A few blocks away on the corner of Dundas and Ronsesvalles, the streets have been completely transformed into a hip 50s main street. Apparently the film is Hairspray but we're confused because why the heck would they remake such a great film? We'll be looking into that.

Reva continues with the Subway series
