Back to regularly scheduled life

Well, TIFF is finished for this year. Aren clocked in at 27 films and I at 16 (13 together). Some good, some walk-out-of-the-theatre bad, some interesting but not compatible with the medium of film. All in all it was fun and exhausting. My day went a little something like this: get up at 5:00am, at the Industry Box Office for 6:30, issue tickets to directors, actors, buyers and sales reps from around the world, off at 1:00pm, watch films and try to be in bed for 10:00pm. Aren went pretty hardcore with up to 5 screenings a day. Here is our very opinionated breakdown of what we saw:

Top 2 (as pictured above):
Shortbus
Red Road

Exceptional:
Climates
The Art of Crying
Away From Her
Princess

Good:
Requiem
London to Brighton
An Evening with Michael Moore
Stranger than Fiction
The Fall
Rescue Dawn
Monkey Warfare
Vanguard Cinema: John Waters in conversation with John Cameron Mitchell
The Last Winter
The Banquet
Lights in the Dusk
Breaking and Entering

Could have been better:
Bamako
Brand upon the Brain!
Born and Bred
L'Homme de sa Vie
Penelope
The Bubble

Shouldn't have been a film:
Manufactured Landscapes
The Prisoner or How I Planned to Kill Tony Blair

Walk-out-of-the-theatre bad:
Waiter
The White Planet
A Stone's Throw
Bugmaster
The Caiman

In other news, we finally found a place. It's another sublet, on the other side of town (Dundas St East and Ontario). Aren's commute will much shorter and it'll be the most downtown/urban place either of us has lived. The immediate neighborhood isn't amazing but it's quite close to Cabbagetown which seems nice and has lots of amenities. The apartment itself is a medium sized studio (we seem to living in smaller and smaller places), has in suite laundry, hardwood floors and a dishwasher. The doing the dishes is the bane of both of our existences so hopefully this it will add a delightful ease to our lives. The building has a communal party room and a beautiful rooftop deck with a container garden. I'm looking forward to having some herbs though I suppose there isn't much more growing time left in this neck of the woods.

So glad to hear you found a place you like. Thanks for the film reviews.

I parked on your site while chatting with Singne on the phone. Hope I haven't messed up your stats too badly.

The poster makes leads me to believe that Shortbus is a film about a lethal and highly fecund virus that spreads across the globe, killing everyone except hipster urbanites in their late 20's/early 30's (are they happy about it?). Perhaps they built up an immunity from childhood consumption of Mr. T cereal.

Interesting take on it Nate! (Those hipster urbanites look pretty happy about it.)
Shortbus is the only one of the films that I had heard about, mostly about Sook-Yin Lee's role - I thought it sounded good, so I'm glad to have your confirmation on that. And it's great to have your list to refer to when these films come to us. What a marathon of filmfest activity for you both!
So glad that your house-hunting has ended satisfactorily, look forward to updates. xox

I'm looking forward to seeing the Sarah Polley film, I'd heard about it before and was glad to see it on your list of good ones.
