the deck

One of the best things about our apartment is the deck. It's a decent size, with plenty of room for plants and a nice table and chairs. We have been taking our breakfasts out here most mornings. Lovely.

I decided to try for some end of season lettuce. Despite a colony of ants attempt to steal all the seeds after I planted them, the lettuce is sprouting.

All was going so well, except one day, we noticed that the neighborhood cats/raccoons/very agile dogs were visiting us at night and relieving themselves on our deck. Ack. The cats of Toronto seem to view us as the perfect litter box. We did some research online about dissuading cats and decided to try cardboard soaked in ammonia. So far, so good.

I've never actually had a deck myself, yours looks very appealing - except for the nocturnal visitors ... I wonder why they come to your deck?!
Hopefully the ammonia strategy will break the habit and the next generation won't think to do it.

Alicia was on Bowen today, it was a gorgeous day, we had tea out on the rocks, then dinner sitting on the wooden chairs - almost as good as having a deck.

Good luck with your wee lettuce sprouts Reva. Be thankful you don't have any deer!

hey you two
welcome back to TO...
do you have any WD-40 around?
oddly, that's supposed to annoy animals too;
apparently they find the odor repulsive.
and, if you use enough ammonia and WD-40, you won't have any humans visiting either... :)
cheers -
paul
